Textual Analysis-Sugar Rush

Textual Analysis :Sugar Rush

The theme of this documentary is the issue of diabetes, the purpose of this film is to educate and make people aware of the seriousness of diabetes. Although many people are aware of the disease not many know the true affect it causes on the victim. This documentary seeks to achieve full attention and support of the audience.

The Documentary shows different information with different interviews, involving specialists and is very informative.

Scene opens to blank screen, there are frames of back through the first 30 seconds, the dialogue starts almost immediately, as well as the background music.

The music is very soft and has a sad feel to it, this seems to fit the theme well as it sets the mood for the overall film. The opening shows this is a narrated documentary,By using these techniques within the first 30 seconds of the documentary it helps create the sense of urgentness within the message of how serious this disease is.through the dialogue we learn the struggle this one person went through.this is shown through his narration and images of him.

The information is presented by the narration, as well as interviews with professionals and people with diabetes, there are many pictures throughout the documentary showing the effects it had on one person as well as reenactments of what happened before he had found out and how he ignored the symptoms.
This documentary is informative and has many experts of the subject involved.

The editing within the documentary is very strong, there is a lot of cross cutting however the overall pace of the film is at a normal rate and stays constant throughout the whole of the documentary. The film maker had a logical pattern to the editing and the structure was basic, the film starts off with the symptoms then to the help and support and then to interviews and how people have coped with it, this gives the audiences an insight to how the journey is carried out

The overall audio in this documentary is basic. The background music is constant and the same pace throughout, the only other sounds are dialogue. Within the dialogue there are many different voices but all at the same pace and all have the same tone of calmness and accepting.

The mode of the documentary Is Expository, this is because it intends to expose the people and information about diabetes, it involves pictures playing along with narration. The documentary is very opinionated and has different aspects to it for example interviews

The beginning of the documentary sets the mood of the whole thing, it starts off to a blank scene and clips flash in and out of the black background, this engages the audience straight away and keeps them keen to find out what is happening.Towards the middle of the documentary we start to learn more about the disease and how it works, the way with it and peoples stories  and their struggles,At the end of the documentary we are told stories about people who didn’t let their disease define them and how they overcame it and learn to live with it everyday rather than struggles.

The overall theme of the documentary is basic however it touches on a subject that many people are unaware of, the use of sounds, editing and camera techniques help to bring the message to life and be understood by the audience. we see these techniques throughout the whole documentary and to concluded i think this is a very strong documentary due to the support of all the techniques.
